Celebrating Diversity Festival 2011

The 1st CELEBRATING DIVERSITY FESTIVAL was held in May 2011.

Part of the OPENING SPEECH:
At EMU, we are very fortunate to have students from nearly seventy different countries. This represents an extraordinarily rich range of cultures, traditions, languages and knowledge. Many of these students study with us here at the Preparatory School, and are still studying to improve their English, not only for the sake of their studies, but also to make new friends from different parts of the world, and to share stories and experiences about their lives. We have so much that we can learn from each other. It is this diversity that we quite rightly are celebrating today. We do hope you will enjoy your day, and get a taste of how colourful our campus and university have become over the years.

HOPING THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO MEET ALL STUDENTS IN 2012 AT THE SECOND CELEBRATING DIVERSITY FESTIVAL.

FOR LAST YEAR'S PHOTOS AND POSTERS, PLEASE VISIT:

SFL EPS Promotion Activities

The EMUSFL Promotion Unit attended the EMU's 'Welcoming Party' held on
the 29th of September at Atatürk Square (CL Square) from 19:00-23:00. The SFL Promotion Unit had a stand and all the members distributed leaflets to new and old students promoting courses offered by SFL that would prepare them for internationally-recognised certification, namely TOEFL, IELTS, LCCI, TOLES and City & Guilds. The outcome of the Welcoming Party has been very positive, as there has been high student interest in SFL and the courses offered.

As a follow up step, the SFL Promotion Unit has now started to appear on local TV talk shows to give information on these exams and the courses offered. On Monday (3/10/2011), Nilgün H. E. and Cemil S. were interviewed on KIBRIS TV live. They talked about SFL as a whole and the Common European Framework, and then gave information on City & Guilds. Further interviews will be held during this month and the time and dates of these broadcasts will be shared with the whole of SFL in the near future.

The Community Involvement Projects (CIP) Working Group also organized a CIP Orientation Day for intermediate students on the 30th of September in the Green Hall. The orientation began with a slide show of students and teachers during community activities in the previous two semesters. It was followed by a power point presentation and discussion about what CIP projects were, and how these projects could be carried out with the help of their teachers. At the end of the presentation, students were asked to sign up for the project they were willing to work on. The outcome was very positive since the students showed great interest and enthusiasm for the projects.

Thanks to all those who contributed to all these events.

Are there any Turkish courses in the English Preparatory School?

Since Turkish is the official language here in Northern Cyprus, it's obviously useful if you're not a Turkish speaker to get to know the language for your day-to-day life.

But did you know that Turkish is one of the top twenty most frequently used languages in the world, and that varieties of Turkish are spoken right across Turkey and central Asia and all the way to China?

Our advice is to take advantage of your time in Northern Cyprus and make sure you learn as much as you can of this increasingly important language.

Watch out for announcements about our survival Turkish programme.
